| The key to any successful event is the planning prior to the event. Camp is no different. The advance team started on Wednesday night by loaded up the "ice cream" truck. With all the product, it was a good thing that Sinclair's crate was already loaded or there wouldn't have been room for it! Nice and early on Thursday morning, we made our way to Camp Kirk ensuring that we had plenty of time to get organized and set up. We ended the day by setting up the raffle table and making up the welcome packs - this was a bit like dessert at the end of a good meal! | |
Friday started with a steady downpour which made us glad to have done most of the "outdoor chores" the day prior. It added travel time for some but it soon cleared up and we were blessed with great weather for the rest of the weekend.
As campers arrived, they were bowled over with the Camp Doggin' It welcome package - a waist pack filled with tasty treats. But wait, that wasn't all ... there were cookies that couldn't fit into the pack as well as other gifts for handlers too! This set the tone for the weekend ... fun, fun, fun and lots of prizes!!!
There were lots of social activities which gave our pups some down time - everything from the ice breaker bingo game to the Saturday night sock hop. The first aid lecture hosted by Lynda Kitson, K9 Compass, was a lot of fun and very informative. It's so important for pet owners to understand and appreciate potential emergency situations that they may be presented with. Thanks to Alanna, we were able to hold our S'mores and more campfire social! It seems that there's a whole lot more to lighting a fire than wood and matches (or in our case, a lighter)! Then there was the demo ... thank you Stephanie and Phasor for the disc dog demo. You really WOWed us all. I can't believe that Phasor isn't even two!!! A big shout out to Morgan for walking us through the sport of flyball; everything from how it's trained to seeing two teams compete. These dogs are crazy fast!! Unfortunately, our good times had to come to an end but not without an opportunity to play some games. It was interesting watching people strategize at the agility fun match. The gamblers course gave us all a chance to see what it's like to trial. There's a lot to consider - do I go for the points and hope my dog does well or do I work within my comfort zone? Then there was the Rally O match. Totally different. Nancy really put the FUN back into fun match. Her Rally O inspired match was a lot of fun to watch and to play.
I'm so proud of everyone's achievements over the weekend and of course, the instructors were given the difficult job of selecting the Most Improved. It was truly touching to see campers being honoured with a beautiful rosette at our Awards Banquet. I hope that they all continue their journey with their 4 legged friend. We ended our fantastic weekend with the awards for the fun matches. The competition was stiff - everyone did so well. In the end, only a few points separated the runner up from the high in match!
