Wow, where does the time go??? February already and promoting this year's camp is in overdrive. I'm also reviewing all the feedback I recieved from last year's camp with the hopes of making this year's even better!!! There were a few campers that had asked about dog friendly places to stay that were close by - I know all about creature comforts and so do my dogs! I'm happy to report that I have found a site which lists pet friendly accomodations in the area (http://www.explorekawarthalakes.com/en/stay/petfriendly.asp). I've also including this link on the FAQ page for future reference. Hopefully, there will be something suitable for all who want to stay offsite.
For those who have been following my posts on our Facebook page, you'll know of my neighbour's 3 year old dog who now has kidney problems because of a vitamin D overdose. The source of the vitamin D was dog food that was recalled but the owner was not aware. Please share this link http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ and register for their recall alerts. I think you'll agree that just one dog suffering from the affects of eatting recalled food is too many.

Some of you may also know that I have a new puppy ... Twizzler came home mid-November. You'll all be meeting him in at camp in September. It's been a long time since I've had a puppy and boy, there's a lot of stuff I've forgotten about over the years. Sometimes, I think this is a good thing ... I'm not sure if I would have made the same decision. KIDDING!! Of course, I would have! I'm just sayin' things are way different with Twizzler than with Scrumpy and Java. AND, I have to say that the biggest lesson I'm re-learning is on managing the environment. So far the casualties have been slippers, a rug (luckily it's just the corner), the plastic tips of shoe laces, a bunch of zippers and half a dozen stuffed toys. My best friend is Bitter Apple and it's gotten to the point where I just have to show it to curb the behaviour. Of course, I've got him in training classes ... we've finished Puppy Pre-school and are now in Puppy Agility and beginner obedience. This is the part of puppyhood that I love. Oh and of course, I love to show him off. I took all the dogs to a senior's church function as part of the Woofjocks troupe. He was such a good boy and he certainly melted the hearts of many. In fact, one woman told me that if I was ever looking for a puppy sitter to call her. I asked if she was offering for all 3 dogs. She sheepishly told me that she was only interested in my little boy! Hahaha ... gotta laugh. It's hard to resist a cuddly little puppy, that's for sure!
One of the things I didn't realize was that even with a puppy, there are high and low value treats. Of course, dehydrated liver remains the highest value for all the pooches. I've also made salmon patties for them ... this seems to be the next highest value reward. I like the fact that they are quick and easy to make and the dogs practically do back flips when they get them. I actually got this recipe many years ago from one of the trainers at the very first dog camp I attended. I've made them many times over the years and they really have staying power - not like some treats where the dogs tire of them after a bit. If you have any great recipes that you'd like to share, please email them to me. Who knows maybe there's a Camp Doggin' It recipe book in the future. In the meantime, if you want my salmon treat recipe, drop me a line and I'll send it your way.
Until next ime, keep safe, warm and dry - the snow is starting to fly here!!
